Schedule an AppointmentGum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is one of the most common threats to long-term oral health. At New York City Periodontics, we provide modern, effective treatment for all stages of gum disease—from early gingivitis to advanced periodontitis—with a focus on prevention, early detection, and long-term maintenance.
Gum disease begins with plaque, a sticky biofilm of bacteria that accumulates along the teeth and gumline. In its earliest stage, gingivitis, the gums may appear red, swollen, or bleed easily with brushing or flossing. If left untreated, the condition can progress into periodontitis, where infection extends below the gumline and begins to destroy the supporting bone and connective tissues that hold teeth in place.
As periodontal disease advances, it can lead to gum recession, deep periodontal pockets, tooth mobility, and ultimately tooth loss if not properly managed.
A comprehensive periodontal evaluation, including advanced imaging and clinical examination, may be necessary to determine whether a tooth can be periodontally treated and which treatment approach offers the best long-term outcome.
We use advanced diagnostic tools and evidence-based periodontal therapy to identify and treat gum disease at every stage. Treatment is customized to the severity of the condition and may include:
Daily oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing, combined with regular periodontal evaluations, remains the most effective way to prevent gum disease or identify it early when it is most treatable. Early intervention significantly reduces the risk of bone loss and tooth damage.
Hyun Jae Harry Cho, DDS, earned his degree in dentistry with honors from New York University College of Dentistry and further obtained a specialty certificate in periodontics from Stony Brook University. He also obtained a master’s in business administration from Stony Brook and is currently earning a master’s in oral biology and pathology.
Periodontal health is closely linked to overall systemic health. Research has shown associations between gum disease and conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other chronic inflammatory conditions. For this reason, treating periodontal disease is not only essential for preserving teeth, but also for supporting overall health and wellness.
At NYC Periodontics, we take a comprehensive, long-term approach that prioritizes stability, function, and prevention. Whether you are seeking preventive care or managing advanced periodontal concerns, we will work closely with you to develop a personalized treatment plan that supports both comfort and confidence.
