Pinhole Gum Surgery in New York
Gum recession is an extremely common condition, affecting a large portion of the adult population. In fact, studies suggest that up to 80% of individuals will experience some degree of gingival recession during their lifetime. It is often caused by a combination of factors, including traumatic tooth brushing, tooth position within the arch, orthodontic history, thin periodontal biotype, or genetic predisposition to naturally thinner gum tissue.
When gum tissue recedes, the protective barrier around the tooth root is lost. Over time, this can progress if left untreated, leading to increasing root exposure, sensitivity to temperature and touch, aesthetic concerns, and in more advanced cases, increased risk of root damage and eventual tooth loss due to loss of protective support.
At NYC Periodontics, our approach to treating gum recession is highly conservative and biologically driven. We prioritize minimally invasive and regenerative techniques whenever possible, including advanced methods that reduce or eliminate the need for traditional tissue harvesting. In select cases, traditional gum grafting—using tissue harvested from the palate—may still be recommended. When this approach is needed, it is performed with meticulous attention to detail, focusing on patient comfort, precise tissue handling, and careful protection of both the donor and recipient sites to optimize healing.
